Relational Culture Series

Many communities working for social justice face challenges in building strong relationships. Often we fall into grinding conflict, rupture, and pain despite striving to live by our values. The reality is, it is challenging to build resilient community amidst a dominant culture of oppression, isolation, and competition.

We need to shift away from this culture, and toward renewed community connection. This is urgent. We believe we need to prioritize holding relationships at the center of our strategies for change.

In Relational Uprising, we use storytelling and somatics to cultivate that culture shift together. We see resilience as a community’s collective capacity to sustain this intentional culture.

Through our 3-part training series, Bonding, Embodying, and Bridging, participants learn tools and practices that build resilience at the ecological, cultural, community, and individual levels through three resources: Distributed Dependency, Sensitivity to Connection, and Sustained Inclusion.

This is deep, meaningful work that requires intention and effort. To shift culture in these times, it will take collectives of people working together over time.

We created Relational Uprising because we want to support this shift, and support communities who are committed but need more tools for collective resilience.

Relational culture 1: Bonding PRACTICE

This module explores the basic intentional practice of establishing a caring community to unveil and acknowledge our relational support systems in order to widen our experiential understanding of their influence in shaping the context and culture of our collaboration within our team.

We learn practices for bonding and empathic communication that allow us to feel whole and connected, and to foster a safe and trusting community in the midst of a complex and painful world. Through Storytelling and Somatics practice we learn to distribute the support of a caring community for all, and we come to embody stories of connection in our lives, our bodies and our relationships.

This training will prepare participants to teach and facilitate basic Storytelling and
Resonance practice as a first step to spread relational culture within social justice communities.

Financial Support: We want this training to be accessible to anyone who wants to attend, regardless of ability to pay. A limited number of partial scholarships are available for those with financial need. We prioritize volunteer organizers, low-income people, people of color and communities that experience other structural barriers to access for funding. relational culture 2: EMBODYING PRACTICE

This module explores the intentional practice of unveiling and acknowledging our bodily, nonverbal, ecological worlds of experiences that emerge in deep relation, away from ideologies of social dominance, mastery and competition that attack and repress our bodies and the earth in our collaborative work. Through Somatic Touch, Somatic Play and Somatic Ceremony practice we learn to sustain our sensitivity to connection to each other and the ecology.

This module dives in the experiential understanding of a long view of our ecological story as humans and earthlings on this planet. And how we have repetitively failed to align and maintain the flourishing of our civilizations with a powerful stewardship for living ecosystems, specially for the last 8,000 to 6,000 years, just the 5% of our total human story. In the process, we will mimic the evolutionary journey of life, discovering that the human capacities for vitality, sensitivity, mobility, emotionality, influenceability and vulnerability are much older than human beings, reaching far back in the 4.6 billion year ancestral Story of Life. And that these unleashed relational somatic capacities have evolved to align us with key ecological adaptations and principles: enduring interdependent organization of profound sensitivity and rich diversity. They ensure that every part of the ecosphere will have a wired-in connection to critical resources for recovery and coherence. Participants re-energize their bodies in community, creating the needed support to confront trauma and systems of oppression, and come together to heal and shift culture for the long haul and in the moment-to-moment, from co-emergence to supported emergency.

This module is grounded in the Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education and Gestalt Embodied Learning; it is also a synthesis of the more recent Social Neuroscience research in regards to brain change, trauma and learning in an ecological context (i.e., autonomic co-regulation through the “social engagement system”, development of relation through “limbic states of connection”, and the significant difference of cultivating bottom-up or top-down embodiment in our human capacities and cultures). Participants will learn three baseline embodiment tools designed to foster peer support, cultivate collective healing, resilience and be easily spread through popular education.

relational culture 3: bridginG PRACTICE

This module explores the intentional practice of unveiling and acknowledging the need to be influenced and changed by one another's diversity in sustained and complex ways to ensure equity in our collaborative work.

We explore the intentional practices that expand our capacity to include diversity and complexity, anticipating challenges which inevitably emerge from deep relationship. We learn practices for bridging disparities of risk, access, and power in our relationships.

This creates a path to deep appreciation and understanding that allows us to amplify the resilience of our social/community fabric, generating more equitable opportunity, decentralized agency, and collective learning. We learn relational approaches to conflict within groups, including those that emerge both in immediate, intimate relationships as well as along intersections of race, class, gender, generation and other forms of diversity.

We explore identity as both an important site of inclusion and justice, and as a complex reality rooted in a long history of social construction and division, exploring how we can reclaim and honor together the stories that make up each of our lives, lineages and legacies.
